Securing your home during the holidays

Category Advice

Holidays are about rest and relaxation but many people struggle to unwind while away. They constantly worry about how their empty home could be a target for thieves. To help get rid of that nagging feeling this festive season, we’ve compiled a guide for securing your home while on holiday.

Play pretend

While you’re away, it’s important to create the illusion that you are still at home. Don’t tell strangers or unnecessary people about your trip. When packing your luggage into the car, do it discreetly and in the garage if possible.

Make sure you organise for friends, neighbours or family members to check your home daily. If possible, ask your neighbours to park their cars in your driveway every now and then to create the impression of people coming and going.

If you can’t arrange for someone to visit or house sit, cancel your newspaper deliveries and set daily alarms or set radios to turn on at regular intervals. According to ADT South Africa, there are many timer plugs that can help you turn on lights and electronic devices.

Pull off the covers

Thieves like to stay undercover, working in darkness and hidden corners. Make sure your house has a clear line of sight from the street. You can do this by cutting any trees or bushes that obscure your front and back door and windows. Also report any broken streetlights, make sure your house number is visible for the fastest response in the event that you call for help, and remember to install movement-sensor lights before you leave.

Lock it up

Always lock up your doors and windows, even if you’re going out for a few minutes. Also install a small safe in your home so you can lock up some of your valuables while you’re away.

Test and upgrade security

Test your alarm system before leaving. You need to ensure that your alarm is fully functional and that the sound is loud enough. A barking dog can also provide effective security while you’re away. But regardless of whether you have one or not, consider putting up a “Beware of the dog” sign to make thieves think twice about targeting your home. Also do final checks before you depart, including checking that all doors and windows are closed and locked, the alarm system is activated and valuables are in the safe or out of sight.

Now that your house is secure, go and enjoy your well-deserved holiday
