Secret Hiding Spots

Category Design Tips

There are many reasons for having a secret hiding stash. It's an extra deterrent for burglars. You've just moved in with someone and haven't yet told her about your immense cookie jar collection. Or, more simply, you're paranoid. You know what they say: "One man's blanket storage is another man's secret junk food stash."

Here's a round up of some projects to help you hide your valuables and embarrassing behaviors:

Stylish Wall Storage
The cable for my building comes in a weird location half way up the wall in the kitchen. It's awkward and problematic. If I would have seen this cool project a few years back I might have been inspired to do something about it before now. Don't hate the problematic wires and modems, embrace them — oh yeah, and cover them up with giant artwork! Back in 2009 (that's like a decade in cat years!) over at Mamamekko, this great oversize artwork was featured. It caught my attention, well because let's face it. I'm simple and it's a giant number 5.
Behind the panel lies the router and modem along with an electrical bar for the space. They would have normally come in at the bottom by the floor (you can see the hidden cord running up the wall), but putting them in a box or basket would have made the footprint of the room seem smaller and weighed down.
Instead, things have been run up the wall and displayed proudly. Plus, when your internet goes down and you have to do the unplug-replug thing, it's easy to see which little lights are on without swearing up a storm. Wait, only I do that? Well carry on then. There's more at Mamamekko.

Doortop Stash
What does the top edge of say, your utility closet door look like? I’m betting that you’ve probably never seen it, even if you’ve lived in your home for awhile. And although there’s not a lot of room to hide stuff in there, well, if you’re like me, the stuff you want to hide is usually on the smaller side. Not many people think of the space inside the door as a hiding spot, but it’s right there in easy reaching distance when you need to get to it. And it’s devious enough that, yes, I think this trick will still be effective even after we blog it all over the tubes.

Beck Marks the Spot for Secret Storage
When a medicine chest is recessed into a wall, the only thing you see is a framed picture of Beck. At our local ReStore we find chests like this for just a few dollars and think it would be a great way to add a little more storage in any room in your home! You could put this idea to use anywhere in the home and there's a good chance renters might be in the clear as well. Check with your landlord first, but if you agree to leave the frame and the unit in the wall when you leave, other tenants will be able to use it after you.
A series of three in a row would make a great spice cabinet in your kitchen, one next to your bed would be a great place to put your glasses before you turn off the light, or even keep unmentionable items away from plain view from your guests. It's a great repurposing project — even if yours doesn't have Beck's face on it!

Hidden Jewelry Box from Design Sponge
Jewelry storage is a hot topic for a lot of readers, so i set to work brainstorming some possibilities! There are basically two camps: people who like their jewelry on display (neatly of course), and people who like to hide it away (also neatly). Herewith two DIYs for jewelry storage that can satisfy both camps. The first is an attempt at hidden storage, which in this case is a mega top-secret, ninja-spy, behind-the-painting deal. The idea of secret hiding places in fat old books, under rugs, and behind old paintings is handy. This is pretty easy to rig up, especially if you have an old painting with a nice wood frame, but really any picture with a relatively wide wood frame will do fine. If you feel like you have too much jewelry to fit, this can also be a great way to store keys and mail by the entryway. Or you could pair it with a nice leather bound book with a secret cutout container.

Hollow Stash Book
how to make your own secret stash book! I've always had a soft spot for hollow books; the idea of looking like a little angel whilst hiding something like a little devil has always appealed... perhaps because it's not far from the truth most of the time! Be it hidden sweeties, jewellery or money inside... or perhaps even as a cute little planter, we're sure you're going to love your book after it's been reincarnated as much as we do

DIY Hide-a-Key
Going on summer holidays and wondering which clever place to keep your spare house key while you are gone? For a relatively small price of under 10 dollars you could buy one of those fake rocks with a key compartment hidden in its underside. But a fake rock tends to look like a fake rock and leaves you wondering if it's acting like some sort of beacon to onlookers who are up to no good. Why not use a real rock? One from your very own garden is bound to fit in. Pop over to Zakka Life to find out what to do with your old prescription bottle, some heavy-duty glue and an inconspicuous rock. Or even use some other item that is readily found in your yard, such as one commenter suggested, a large pine cone.

And, if all else fails, just go buy this and stick it in your fridge:

Iceberg Lettuce Safe

You have never seen anything like this - but it is one of the latest security gadgets - and it is so cool! It is a realistic looking head of Iceberg Lettuce, and has a hidden compartment. Thieves will never dream of looking in this head of Iceberg Lettuce for valuables! Place this realistic head of Iceberg Lettuce in your refrigerator in the vegetable compartment with your most valuable small items inside for safe-keeping.
The bottom snaps off to reveal a secret hiding place. The ideal way to protect cash, jewelry and other valuables while at home or traveling. Thieves will never dream of looking in this book for valuables, now that you have the opportunity to buy this unique protection of your valuables.
