7 ways to warm up your bathroom this winter

Category Design Tips

Jeeves shares tips on how homeowners can heat up their bathrooms this winter:

1. Heated towel rails
Stepping out of your bath or shower straight into a toasty towel courtesy of a heated towel rail will keep you wonderfully warm this winter.
Heated rails also have the ability to warm up a small bathroom. In fact, unless your bathroom is particularly big, you can enjoy the warmth provided by a heated rail.
Once you have dried off and gotten dressed, all that is left to do is place your damp towel on the rail. This will ensure that your towel is dry and ready for when next you need it, giving you an uninterrupted supply of warm towels this winter. Nowadays, homeowners can get toweling rails with two energy-efficient heated bathroom rail options: the electric units with intelligent Automatic Heating Technology (AHT) and the eco-friendly Hydronic heated towel rails powered by solar-generated hot water together with a wholly solar-powered circulation pump, resulting in zero running costs. Making use of an electric circulation pump on hydronic heating systems results in negligible running costs due to the low wattage ratings of these appliances. AHT features a built-in thermostat which automatically responds to temperature changes and activates internal switches controlling the heated towel rail using intermittent electricity, and ensuring optimum operating temperatures and the lowest electricity consumption

2. Warm Colours
Adding warm colours to your bathroom can create a feeling of warmth, while lifting your spirits in the process. Introduce colours like warmer autumnal shades or soft yellows. Bringing in a warm summer touch creates a look and feel that can heat up your bathroom experience. Add colour to your bathroom by painting the walls, using towels, wood accents or incorporating gold, brass and copper ornaments into your space.
Even hanging wall art of a scene with a golden sunset palette can add a warmer and cosier feel to your bathroom.

3. Heat retaining baths
A long, indulgent bath can be a great way to get warm, but you may find that you need to keep adding hot water to your bath to maintain the water temperature.  One solution comes in the form of a bath which retains heat. These baths are made from enameled steel, copper, stone, brass and limestone, all of which are capable of maintaining water temperature. While the price tag may need to be taken into consideration, the luxury of warm water, together with the baths' unique appeal, can make for a convincing argument.

4. A fireplace for the bathroom
Having a fireplace is both a novelty and luxury which adds to the cosy ambience of a winter bathroom.
With the warmth of the fire no longer relegated to the kitchen, dining room or lounge areas, a bath accompanied by the crisp sounds of burning wood and the soft glow from the fire is the ideal way to enjoy a bath. Installing a fireplace in the bathroom is fairly easy, plus there is the additional choice of alternative options like the semi-portable electrical offerings, which are almost as good as their built-in counterparts.

5. Have a warm shower
Swapping your shower head for a newer model is an eco-friendly option. Older models use between 20 and 30 litres of water a minute, compared to the new energy-efficient models which tend to use as little as 8 litres, allowing you to shower a little longer and build up more steam to warm up your bathroom.
Consider getting a rain shower which provides a wonderful flow of water. These shower heads come in a range of choices, from single spray patterns to multiple jets that deliver heated water.

6. Basic efficiency
Check your bathroom windows to see if they are letting in any cold air. This can be done by holding your hand close to the window to check for any drafts.
Homeowners can opt for replacement windows or use a waterproof filler and sealant like silicone caulk to close gaps around the window jambs and frames. Moreover, adding a residential window film adds solar control, which yields the dividend of added privacy.  Simply use a hairdryer to shrink the film to fit your window surface.Temperatures can also be increased by adding or upgrading your insulation. Curtains or heavy blinds will help insulate the room, while providing an attractive covering for the sealant areas.

7. Heat lamps
Switching on a heat lamp gives you the benefit of both light and warmth. Infra-red heating technology offers long-lasting lamps that provide instantaneous heating and are splash-proof. Consult with an electrician before installing a heat lamp in your bathroom to ensure safe installation.

Use these tips to say 'goodbye' to a cold winter experience and 'hello' to snuggling into a delightfully warm space. These are so appealing, you may just be forgiven for not ever wanting to leave your bathroom this winter.
