Queensburgh at a glance

Queensburgh has grown in popularity mainly because of its great location, it includes as many as ten suburbs. Situated south west of the City of Durban it is centrally located to the southern industrial suburbs and Pinetown’s industrial areas and just a short drive from the Pavilion shopping centre, Pinetown, Chatsworth, central Durban. Accessibility to the main highways is good with the M7/ N2 /N3 highways all being within easy reach.

The Queensburgh area developed when early settlers wanted to escape from the humidity of the coast and so they headed to the inland hills. In 1924 four residential suburbs in the area being Malvern, Escombe, Northdene and Moseley combined to form the town of Malvern. In 1952 to celebrate the reigning Queen Elizabeth's coronation, Malvern received municipality status and changed its name to Queensburgh.

In recent times, Queensburgh has seen a significant boom in the property market with major developments in infrastructure and amenities in the area. This includes the recent completion of the upgrade to the Malvern Centre an upmarket shopping precinct which includes a Woolworths 24 Food Market.

A number of affluent residents have also invested in Queensburgh, challenging the area’s reputation as a blue-collar borough. There is now a great mix of middle class and upper income earners living here.

The area offers many affordable properties for first-time home buyers and young families as well as large upmarket homes for the upper-income earner. There are more than ten schools in the area, both English and Afrikaans speaking, including one for children with special needs as well as two children’s homes.

Queensburgh boasts beautiful parks and green belts, sport clubs and playgrounds and is home to the North Park Nature Reserve – a protected area of coastal lowland forest next to the Umhlatazuna River. Delightful paths have been carefully laid and one can wander past established ponds that are a haven for water birds and spot the odd bushbuck, grey duiker or mongoose.

It is also situated in close proximity to the Albert Luthuli Academic Hospital and the University of KwaZulu-Natal.
